Introduction

This is a manual about the installation of Pardus 2011 next to Windows on your computer.

This manual is based on Pardus 2011 32/64-bit, which can be downloaded from here.

After applying this manual, you get a computer on which you get the choice of

                       Pardus

or

                       Windows

to start at power-up of the PC.

Warning

When you plan to install Pardus Linux together with Windows (a so-called dual-boot system), it is advisable to have Windows already installed before you install Pardus.

In order to install Pardus it is necessary to resize the Windows partition. Although this process is nearly always without a problem, it is highly recommended to make a backup of your personal data on the Windows partition.

Look here for a manual on how to image(backup) a partition/disk to a remote computer and can also be used to store to a second (USB) hard disk .

The installation

Yali (Yet Another Linux Installer) is the installation program of Pardus. You don't need to be a Linux expert (although it doesn't harm....) to install Pardus with the help of Yali on your computer. For the novice Linux user it will be very easy to do.

Hint: connect and power up all equipment to your computer .

Language selection

At [1] an active timer is shown. The selected language can be changed at [2].

When no keys are activated, the installation will start after ~10 seconds when the timer has finished.

After selecting another language, use the Enter key (2x) to start the installation.

At the bottom some other options for installation are shown with the corresponding Fn key.

The Linux kernel is loaded and some other stuff. It will take some seconds before the next screen is shown, so be patient.

License

This screen is about the GPL license of the Pardus software. You can read the GPL license at [2].

At [5] it's possible to read about the new features of Pardus 2011.1 and at [4] to exit the installation or to restart Yali when required.

Of course we will put a mark at [1] and continue at Next[3]

Media validation

In order to minimize the change on errors during the installation, it is highly recommended to perform this test.

In this screen we can test [1] for errors on the DVD/USB medium. Screen [2] will be shown during the validation.

When this check is successful [3], continue at [4].

Keyboard selection

Select the keyboard layout at [1].

The selected keyboard can be tested in box [2]. Especially the non-alphanumeric keys ( $,*, =, / , etc.) are to be tested.

When necessary, change the keyboard layout and continue at [3].

Timezone selection

Select your timezone,location and change the current date/time (if required) at [1] and continue at [2].

Disk selection

The disk on which Pardus is going to be installed can be selected [1] in this screen.

Partitioning method

In order to be able to install Pardus next to Windows (a so-called dual boot system), the existing partition has to be reduced in size.

Select the Shrink Current System [1] option and confirm this option at [2].

In the next screen the size op the (reduced) Windows partition has to be set with the slider [3].

If this slider is in the left-most position, Windows will not start anymore and it's thus highly undesirable to set the slider in the this position.

As this isn't desirable, slide it to the right and leave enough (remaining) space for Pardus to be installed on.

Confirm the new size at [4].

Bootloader

This is the last important step before installation can begin. The bootloader (Grub) is a program which is started immediately after power-up of the computer.

It gives us the choice which operating system (Pardus or Windows) should be started. In most cases it is installed in the MBR (Main or Master Boot Record) of the first hard disk.

Unless you know what you are doing, a mark should be at [1] and activate the Next button..

Summary overview

Here we see an overview of our changes. By activating "Start Installation" [1] and in the now appearing Confirm screen the "Write Changes to Disk" [2] button, the partition table is written to the hard disk and the installation process of Pardus is started.

Installing Pardus

The installation of Pardus will take about 20 minutes, depending on the speed of your computer. During this installation a slide show and a progression bar [1] is shown.

And you can take a view in the Release Notes [2] of Pardus.

When this process has finished, the next screen will appear.

Restart

After selecting the "Next" [1] button, a pop-up window with Restart[2] will appear.

The DVD will automatically be ejected after activating the Restart button.

Remove the DVD in order to prevent a restart of your computer from the DVD.

When for some reason the DVD isn't removed, the computer will again start from the DVD and the first image in this manual will appear. In this case, select the "Boot from Hard Disk" option and the computer will start from the hard disk.

Wecome back

Now it's time to make the user(s) and system administration settings after activating the Next button.

Create User(s)

With the Advanced [1] button the full features [6] options can be enabled/disabled.

At least one user should be added at [2]. When there are more users, who are going to use this computer, creating multiple users is also possible. Every user gets its own /home/username directory (this is similar to the "My Documents" directory in Windows). Fill in the "New User" fields at [1].

'Bypass authorization attempts for this user[4]

To make system-wide changes (display driver, samba, software repositories, etc ....) you need administrator privileges.

When this box is unmarked the user will get the 'Authentication Required' window, when an action is executed for which administrator right is required (see also the next 'Add user to administration (wheel) group' item).

When this box is marked the user will not not be asked for a password when an action is executed for which administrator right is required (the marking at the next 'Give administrator privileges to this user' item is ignored).

'Add user to administration (wheel) group' check-box [3]

When this box is unmarked you can get administrator privileges with the Administrator password

When this box is marked you can get administrator privileges with your user password from [2].

This option is to prevent from making the root password known to the user(s) on the system.

The user created at [5] will be listed in [6] (see next picture).

Auto Login User

Here [2] you can make changes for disable/enable Auto Login to the system.

Select at [1] and [3] the user that is going to be logged-in automatically after starting the computer and continue at Next.

Administrator (super user or root) password

Here [1] we have to enter the password for the system administrator, sometimes called root.

As the administator can do anything with the system (even destroy it), it is advisable to select a password which is hard to guess.

When this computer is part of a network, it's possible to give this computer a unique name at [2] and continue at Next.

Users Summary

Here an overview of the created users and hostname is displayed.

Continue at Apply Settings.

All is done

No need for an explanation here. It's time to activate the Next button for our new installed Pardus to start for the first time.

This first start of Pardus will be rather slow as some configuration has to be done, but later starts will be much faster.

When you have not enabled automatic login at "Auto Login User", a Login window will appear in which you (after selecting the user) have to supply the password of the user.

After the first start

Welcome from Kaptan

Only after this first start of Pardus the program Kaptan Desktop will automatically be launched, in which you can configure some settings, like the use of left or right hand mouse, style and appearance of the desktop and the automatic update system is configured.

It is possible to start Kaptan later again with: Alt+F2 and enter 'kaptan')

Mouse settings

Double-click or single-click behavior and button order is selected here.

Theme, icon and desktop type

Make your choice of 8 possible themes, 2 sets of icons and type of desktop to use.

Menu style

Select the style of menu (Kickoff, Classic, or Lancelot) to be used.

Wallpaper

Choose the background picture to be used on the desktop.

User picture

Set the user picture which will be shown in the login screen and other places.

Packages

Update settings and appearance of Package Manager on your desktop can be set here.

Smolt information

With Smolt you can send the technical information of the computer to the Pardus databese.

After activating the "Privacy policy" button more information on this subject is shown.

Settings summary

This is an overview of the settings which are going to be applied by activating the "Apply Settings" button.

Congratulations

It's now time to hit the "Finish" button in order to enjoy the newly installed Pardus.

Available updates

Getting and applying the first updates in Pardus is rather important.

Right-klick on the Package Manager icon [1] in the system tray and activate Update > All [2].

After some time, the number of available updates is shown at [3] and can be applied after activating [4].

The above is also possible by using Package Manager > Updates > etc.

Setup WLAN interface

1. Select the non-configured WLAN icon [1] in the system tray.

2. Select the available [2] WLAN interface.

3. Select of the scanned streams the wanted [3] WLAN stream.

4. Check the name [4], the connect automatically marker [5] and type of security [6] (will be auto-detected).

5. Enter the value [7] of the security key of stream [4]

6. Activate the initialization of the interface at [8] and wait some seconds for....

to appear (see also the konsole).

7. That's all.

Check proprietary video driver

1. To check and (if possible) switch to the proprietary video driver, start System Settings > Display > Video Driver.

2. Follow the numbers in the above picture.

When "Use the proprietary driver provided by the manufacturer" is grayed-out, there is no such driver for your currently installed video card.
