1. Install KMail (not installed by default) by installing the kde-pimkmail, kde-pimkaddressbook and spamassassin packages in Synaptic.

2. Check the Kwallet [1a] settings in System Settings > Account Details > KDE Wallet and Nepomuk [1b and 1c] in Desktop Search.

Kwallet setting Nepomuk setting

3. Importing email messages, account (only receiving) settings and addressbook.

As KDE 4.6 stores the user file in ~/.kde/ and KDE 4.7 (and higher) in ~/.kde4/ we have to copy the required files from ~/.kde/share/ into ~/.kde4/share/ with the following three commands in a konsole:

  1. cp -r ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail ~/.kde4/share/apps/. [2]
  2. cp -f ~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc ~/.kde4/share/config/. [3]
  3. cp -r ~/.kde/share/apps/kabc ~/.kde4/share/apps/. [4] followed by confirmation(s) y

And start the migration application with

  1. kmail-migrator --interactive [5]

(have a look in Failed Migration when the migration fails and you want to do the migration again)

Transferring messages and account settings (1/2)

As this will reset your Kwallet settings do:

4. Restart your computer and check again the Kwallet settings as in item 1.

5. At the first start of Kmail you will get (multiple) KWallet pop-up screens about the password and the mode of access (once/always/refuse with always being the preferred choice) and you will also have to supply the password(s) of the email receiving account(s).

6. As the sending account is not imported you will have to set the SMTP account in KMail > Settings > KMail settings > Accounts > Sending.
